While the emerging federal education budget out of Congress does not reflect a particular commitment to or interest in building the capacity of schools to effectively leverage technology for learning (outside of being an eligible use of small competitive grant programs to LEAs) or to be technology-ready for new college- and career-ready assessments, the White House maintains a policy and advocacy interest in the topic.
I want to bring to your attention two recent White House initiatives with upcoming deadlines (one of which we profiled in our email newsbrief):
1. Deadline January 29 (reminder): First-ever White House Student Film Festival: a video contest created just for K-12 students, and whose finalists will have their short films shown at the White House. Finalist videos may also be featured on the White House website, YouTube channel, and social media pages. The White House is looking for student-created videos that highlight the power of technology in schools and that address: (1) how you currently use technology in your classroom or school and (2) the role technology will play in education in the future. 2. Deadline March 7 (just announced): Request for Information: High-impact Learning Technologies – The Office of Science and Technology Policy requests public comments to inform its policy development related to high-impact learning technologies. This Request for Information offers the opportunity for interested individuals and organizations to identify public and private actions that have the potential to accelerate the development, rigorous evaluation, and widespread adoption of high-impact learning technologies. The focus of this RFI is on the design and implementation of “pull mechanisms” for technologies that significantly improve a given learning outcome. Comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. on March 7, 2014, to be considered. In your comments, please reference the question to which you are responding.
